A Cautious Return

Caroline Hinrichs, ‘22

Cayuga with its crawling thunder

In late March stood still and grey

Students, campus torn asunder

As we packed and went away.

N’er did Schoellkopf stand so empty

As it did that summer green.

Chimes atop our tower wept, for

No chimesmaster could be seen.

Now as autumn lights the grounds

And vultures fly across the lake

Still! And you might hear the sound

That less than ten masked singers make.

Spaced apart in sculpture gardens,

Learning theory over zoom,

Sending tons and tons of emails-

One chorus in 40 rooms.

Still, with bated breath we’re waiting

For the day when, in a throng

We can safely lift the chorus

Of a rousing evening song.
